Finding Your Photography Positioning
Ian PlantDescription
Ansel Adams had a rule to achieve a quality photograph. It is knowing where to stand, or photography positioning. In this free video, world renowned outdoor photographer Ian Plant takes you to the South Dakota Badlands for tips on photography positioning. After you select a landscape scene, he recommends shooting from different positions, left, right, up, down, forward and back. The key is to capture many variations. He shows you what he calls the perfect composition of the Badlands taken with his Canon 11-24mm lens. Pro shooter Ian Plant believes that a memorable landscape image is achieved through the technique of photography positioning.
Ansel Adams once famously said that a good photo is knowing where to stand. And what he meant by that is you gotta choose the right position, the right perspective, to really bring the composition to life. So when you're looking for a good composition, don't just walk up to the scene, plop your tripod down, and start shooting and never move. Move around, even small variations left, right, up, down, forward, back, can completely change your perspective. So maybe I'll zoom in a little bit or zoom back out.
I try all these variations until I find that perfect composition.
