Every photographer has a place that they gravitate towards, a kind of photography, a type of experience that they enjoy more than anything else. Mine's always been the outdoors. It doesn't necessarily have to be a wilderness shoot, but I really prefer those and I think there's something about the unknown quantity of going into the wilderness for a photographer that the concept of discovery is very exciting and the things that you stumble across because they're new, because they're not planned, because they don't exist on a day-to-day basis can really be rewarding as a photographer. But anyway, you pack your bags, you figure out how to pack, you get out, you go to where you need to go, the seasons that you want. I tend to look forward to having something that is, I like a storm, for example, to be mixed in with a nice, sunny day.
I like a really cloudy day. All of these things combined really help me walk away from a wilderness shoot with a lot of material, with a lot of depth, I think more importantly, spiritually, with a lot of discovery. And it's those moments and those things that we find on wilderness shoots that keep us coming back. If you're not rewarded, you don't go back and I think I've been lucky. I get rewarded almost all the time and whether it's just luck or hard work, it doesn't matter, it's just fun creating.
